If you plan to share the driving in a Phuket rental car, arrange the second driver before handing over the keys. Check three things: their driving documents, the rental company's authorisation and the applicable protection terms. Having a licence and the main renter's permission does not by itself satisfy every contract requirement.
The appeal of renting is the experience: one person drives while the other chooses the route and music, and you swap roles the next day. Set up that flexibility in advance so the holiday does not depend on a verbal promise at the rental counter.
Three separate checks
Can this person legally drive? Check valid documents and the appropriate vehicle category.
Does the rental company authorise them to drive this particular vehicle? Follow the authorisation process required by the agreement.
What protection applies if they are involved in an incident? Check the agreement, insurance policy and any optional protection products.
The statement that the car is insured does not answer all three questions. Ask where authorised drivers are recorded and what restrictions apply to each of them.
What published rental terms actually say
Budget Thailand lists an additional driver as a separate service. Its page says the additional driver must meet the main driver's requirements and warns that an unnamed driver can invalidate the stated cover. This is a supplier's condition, not a universal description of every insurance policy in Thailand.
In Avis Thailand's published monthly rental terms, clause 1.3 requires driving documents for the renter and any additional driver, with originals required. Clause 6.1 prohibits unauthorised drivers and sets out protection consequences for damage arising from the listed circumstances. These are monthly rental terms: do not assume they apply unchanged to another rate.
Thailand Rent-a-Car's general terms also prohibit allowing unauthorised people to drive. Tell the company at booking how many people intend to drive. Confirm the process, any charge and the relevant protection terms for your own rental; this article does not create a separate pricing policy.

Prepare each driver's documents
Ask what every driver must present, including original documents, minimum age, driving experience and accepted licences. Do not assume a photo will be accepted instead of an original.
Thailand's Government Public Relations Department lists valid Thai licences, International Driving Permits and licences issued by ASEAN countries among the accepted bases for driving. Check the requirements applicable to your particular foreign documents before travelling. Commercial approval from a rental company does not replace legal eligibility to drive.

When using an International Driving Permit, also prepare your national licence. Thailand Rent-a-Car's general terms, for example, specifically list both. Check validity, vehicle category and matching names across your documents and the rental agreement.
An additional driver is not automatically the payer
Being allowed to drive does not necessarily mean you can replace the main renter when paying or providing a deposit. Treat the cardholder question separately, particularly when the card belongs to your travel companion.

Before booking, confirm who signs the agreement, who drives and whose card is used. Do not change the lead renter's name at the last minute without checking the effect on the booking and price.
Five questions before you take the keys
How is the additional driver authorised: in the agreement, an addendum or another agreed document?
Must both drivers attend collection, and which original documents are required?
Is there a charge, does it include taxes and which days are charged?
Do the selected protection terms apply to both drivers, and which exclusions remain?
Can a driver be added later, and exactly when will authorisation take effect?
If you add someone during the holiday, keep the amendment showing its effective date and time. Do not assume a later verbal agreement changes the terms applicable to an earlier incident.
Make the actual driver change straightforward
Stop somewhere safe and permitted, adjust the seat and mirrors, and explain the lights, wipers and parking brake. Set up navigation and phones before moving. If both of you are tired or uncomfortable with the road conditions, take a break: changing drivers does not make every journey safe.
If damage or an accident occurs, report the actual circumstances, including who was driving, and follow the company's and insurer's notification procedures. Do not sign an account you disagree with or do not understand; ask for an explanation and retain copies.

Can my spouse or friend drive the rental car?
First obtain the rental company's approval and check how authorisation is recorded. Being related, or having the main renter in the passenger seat, does not by itself replace the contract requirements.
Is there always an extra charge for a second driver?
There is no universal fee across rental companies. Ask for the total charge, taxes and charging period before booking.
Does every driver need to show documents?
