What Damage Rental Car Insurance May Not Cover

Thailand Rent-a-Car editorial teamReviewed by a Phuket car rental specialistSeptember 2, 2026 · 2 min read

In short: basic insurance covers third-party liability, but not the rental car itself. It usually excludes damage to your vehicle's body, glass, tyres and wheels, and you remain liable up to the agreed excess. Extended coverage reduces or removes that excess.

What basic insurance covers

The basic option ("Minimum protection") includes third-party liability — damage to other road users in an accident. This is essential protection, but it does not apply to your own vehicle.

What basic coverage usually does NOT cover

  • damage to the rental vehicle itself;
  • glass, tyres and wheels;
  • damage within the excess — that part is paid by the renter.

What the excess is

The excess (deductible) is the amount the renter is liable for in case of damage. If you decline extra coverage, the excess defines your financial risk. The "Full Collision Damage Protection (zero excess)" option lowers the excess down to zero.

Situations insurance almost never covers

  • driving under the influence;
  • driving without a valid licence or by an unlisted driver;
  • off-road driving and clearly unsuitable roads;
  • using the wrong fuel;
  • underbody and interior damage from obvious misuse.

How to close these gaps

Choose extended coverage to reduce the excess, record the car's condition at pick-up (photos/video), never hand the wheel to unlisted drivers, and clarify glass and tyre terms in advance. The exact scope of coverage is always stated in the rental agreement.

FAQ

Does basic insurance cover scratches on my car?
No, damage to the rental car itself is usually not included — the renter is liable up to the excess.

Are glass and tyres covered?
Usually not; clarify them separately and take extended coverage if needed.

How do I remove the excess?
Choose the full collision (zero excess) coverage — it lowers the excess down to zero.
