What Can Be Deducted From Your Rental Deposit

Thailand Rent-a-Car editorial teamReviewed by a Phuket car rental specialistSeptember 2, 2026 · 1 min read

In short: the deposit is returned in full if the car comes back in its original condition, with the agreed fuel level, no fines and no damage beyond coverage. Deductions are only made for specific reasons set out in the agreement.

Damage within the excess

On basic coverage, damage to the car is paid by the renter up to the excess. Extended coverage reduces this risk down to zero.

Fuel shortfall

The car is handed over and returned under one fuel rule. If the tank is returned below the agreed level, the difference is deducted from the deposit.

Fines and road tolls

Traffic fines and toll charges incurred during the rental are the renter's responsibility and may be deducted later.

Extra cleaning

Heavy soiling beyond normal use (sand, stains, odour) may require paid cleaning.

Late return and out-of-hours

Returning later than agreed is charged under the agreement; returning outside working hours (8:30 AM - 7:30 PM) is arranged as a separate service.

How to get your deposit back in full

Record the condition and fuel level at pick-up, return the car clean and with the correct fuel, on time and with no unpaid fines. All grounds for deductions are stated in the agreement.
