When cancelling a Phuket car rental, first check your own booking rules: the notice deadline, any deduction, where to send the request and how a refund is made. Prepayment is not always fully refundable, and the vehicle’s security deposit is a separate payment. Not showing up and cancelling in advance are different situations.
Identify what each payment covers
Prepayment normally contributes to the rental or confirms the reservation; a security deposit secures obligations under the agreement. If messages use deposit for either payment, ask which one is meant. Otherwise, one person may be discussing cancellation while the other is discussing security against vehicle damage.
Locate the confirmation, rate conditions and terms accepted when you booked.
Check whether you paid the rental provider or a booking intermediary.
Ask whether a refund goes to the original payment method or becomes credit for a future trip. These are not equivalent.
Early cancellation does not necessarily mean a full refund
Avis Thailand’s published terms, on a page displaying an update date in 2024, describe a 70% prepaid-booking refund for cancellation 24 hours before collection in clause 6.1, and no refund for later cancellation or no-show in clause 6.2. Clause 6.3 addresses early vehicle return separately. Check whether these provisions apply to your rate and booking channel.
Avis Thailand - published terms, section 6
Rentacar Phuket’s direct-booking policy, effective Aug 20, 2026, differs: section 3.1 provides for half the prepayment to be refunded when cancellation is more than 168 hours ahead, while section 3.2 provides no refund at or within that deadline. Section 3.4 ties cancellation to receipt of a complete written request. This is a different operator, not Thailand Rent-a-Car.
These examples compare published policies; they do not establish a universal rule or determine how a disputed clause would apply legally. Labels such as flexible rate or free cancellation are not enough without the precise deadline, exceptions and terms accepted for your booking.
What travellers’ accounts actually tell us
In a Russian-language account on Vinsky’s website, published in November 2024 and updated in February 2025, the author says he booked the wrong month for Phuket and obtained a refund after contacting the intermediary. The page contains affiliate links. It is a personal account with a reported outcome, not a promise that every rate has the same result.

In an English-language Phuket rental discussion from September 2020, another traveller said he could not collect a prepaid car because he had left the required card behind. He acknowledged that the requirement had been explained. The comment does not include the agreement or a refund outcome. It illustrates why prepayment does not replace checking collection requirements; it does not establish deception by a provider.

Use the cancellation channel specified in your booking
Do not stop at asking whether cancellation is possible. Once you have decided, send an unambiguous request through the channel in the confirmation. If you paid an intermediary, establish who cancels the booking and who returns the money; a message to the local delivery driver may not change the intermediary’s booking status.
Include the booking reference, renter’s name and agreed collection date and time.
State that you want to cancel and request confirmation of when the notice was received.
Ask for an itemised explanation of the refund, any deduction and the relevant clause.
Confirm the currency, method and expected dispatch date of the refund. Once sent, request transaction confirmation.
Keep the correspondence and accepted terms. Request received, refund approved and money sent describe different stages. The provider’s processing time and the bank’s posting time can also differ.
Changing dates, no-show and refusal at collection are different
Changing dates may require a revised price and fresh vehicle confirmation. Returning a car early is not the same as cancelling before collection. If the provider could not supply the vehicle, record what happened and its response; do not accept a description saying you simply changed your mind if that is inaccurate.

Does cancelling early always produce a full prepayment refund?

Is telling the delivery driver that I no longer need the car enough?
