Start with overnight parking
Ask your hotel or host where a rental car can stay and whether access is suitable for a larger vehicle. Central spaces near an entrance cannot be assumed, and steep or narrow accommodation roads may change the best vehicle choice.
If several days will be spent only around the beach, Jungceylon and Bangla Road, hiring for the entire stay may be unnecessary. A car becomes more useful when Kata, Karon, Kamala, Bang Tao or early independent departures are on the itinerary.
Arrange a calm handover point
Use a meeting point where the car can be inspected without blocking traffic. Photograph the body, wheels and fuel gauge before entering the busy road network. If the hotel frontage is unsuitable, agree on a nearby accessible point rather than improvising on arrival.
Allow extra time for a return in the evening. Central traffic and local events can make a short final kilometre unpredictable.
Day trips that justify the car
Plan a southern loop through Karon and Kata as one day, and Kamala and Bang Tao as a separate northern route. A Phuket Town visit is easier when the return is timed to avoid the busiest west-coast climb.
Slow down on wet descents and painted surfaces. Do not follow a navigation shortcut through an unfamiliar steep residential lane simply because it saves a few minutes on screen.
